April 22nd – Capt Danny Barrow

Captain Danny Barrow of Silver Lining Fishing Charters is a True Florida native born and raised in West Palm Beach.  Captain Danny has been fishing the inshore and offshore waters of Palm Beach County for over 30 years.  His passion is Snook Fishing with artificial lures, searching the inshore waters of the Lake Worth Lagoon and inlets for these awesome sport fish year-round.  When Captain Danny isn’t Snook fishing, you can find him on the offshore waters of Palm Beach County from the Jupiter Inlet to the Boca Raton Inlet fishing for Wahoo, Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi), Sailfish and other species that roam the reefs and the beaches.

CAPTAINS CORNER

Snook action has been good thanks to all the rain.  Intracoastal Waterway spillways opened p and the snook rolled in on the fresh water discharge like rolling thunder through the sky.  Any live bait was almost immediately inhaled, white and yellow feathers were nailed before they could hit the bottom and top water plugs were hit with a vengeance.  Last weekends rainstorm was just what was needed to not only move a lot of water but to get a lot of different salt and fresh water species active enough to really bite at anything cast into the water.  The Boynton Spillway only had a few boats in current, but they didn’t have to wait long before the snook were hitting any cast bait.  The legal limit of two snook were not hard to achieve as the snook taking baits were either too large or just too small, but there were enough biting that those snook in the slot limit filled the two fish per anglers limit within two hours.  For the boaters that endured the drizzling rain the two hours of wetness was worth the cool rainwater running down the neck and into the eyes.

Look for Kingfish Over the Reefs.  Start sharpening hooks, spooling new line on your reels and take the old boat in for a tune-up.  The annual big run of Kingfish is about to start.  This year the Kingfish action is expected to be very good thanks to the warm weather.  The weather pattern of late winter snowstorms in the north, the weak late winter cold fronts pushing over us and the warm ocean water temperature still present over the reefs, are clues to the great harvest of kingfish this year.  Start looking for Kings over the reefs and near the inlets in water 80-125 feet deep.  The best bait choice to catch Kingfish is determined by the numbers and types of baitfish in the area.  A whole Sardine or a piece of Bonito belly will always work.  If you are not sure where to place your bait, put one near the bottom, but not on the bottom.  Then drift a whole bait at the surface with no weight on it at all.  Small Kingfish are taking the baits now, but the monster kings will soon be inhaling hooks and your reels had better be ready for the task.  This is why you need to be putting new monofilament line on your reels.  The new line is not for the small Kingfish, it is for the 40-pound Kingfish that are coming this way.  Be Ready!

Dolphin action has been fair to sparse thanks to the weather.  These colorful high jumping fish are fun to catch and even better to eat.  The dolphins that have been caught are coming to anglers fishing deeper than 300 feet of water.

Schools of mullet are all over the place and live mullet should be used for Kingfish or Dolphin.  A live mullet will work best day or night.  Find the roaming schools of mullet and you will be filleting fish after your fishing adventure.

Snapper action has been fair and that is good news for everyone that likes the delicate flavor of yellowtail snapper.  Fishing over the rock reefs will net you a variety of small fish, but most are looking for a yellowtail snapper.  These fine eating fish are available, just not a lot of them.

Sailfish have been caught from the Lake Worth Inlet northward.  Live baits at the surface have been the favorite target for these sport game fish.
